Taverner - Bible translator

Richard Taverner was born in Brisley and is depicted on the village sign outside the church.

He was one of a select band of scholars, including William Tyndale, who daringly translated the Bible into English in the 1530s, instead of the accepted Latin that was deemed sacred and set in stone but which few people could read.

Tyndale was executed and Taverner briefly imprisoned in the Tower of London, but survived. Click on the 'Taverner of Brisley' PDF attachment or the 'download' button for his full story.

A modern portrait of an imagined of Taverner - there are no known historic portraits of him - sits in the church 'rood screen', painted by Brisley artist Graham Bell.
