That is the new title for St Andrew’s reordering project. Regular members will remember that about a year ago we launched this project to upgrade our church to make it more suitable for the present and future and also more useable for village events. Many people didn’t know what ‘reordering’ means hence the change of name. This new title also resonates with the church’s mission of welcome.
The project, which has been many years in the planning, includes the provision of toilet and limited catering facilities, improvements to the north door entrance with glass doors and a larger reception area, up graded heating and lighting, a low platform at the front of the church to provide for visiting choirs, musical instruments or children’s events and a screen and projector which will be valuable for work with young people. Plans are displayed in Church.
St Andrew’s is a listed building so the plans have had to be adjusted many times but the necessary planning consent was granted a few months ago and the work can now proceed as soon as funds are available.
We need to share our plans with the wider community of Cheddar including the schools and local businesses and for information to be available on social media. We ask members of the congregation to spread the word because our vision is to make this lovely building more user friendly for community events.
The total estimated cost is in the region of £400,000 - £500,000. The heating system has already been up graded thanks to a previous bequest. A small working group was set up, about a year ago, with the authority of the PCC to implement the project and encourage fund raising. Work is also in hand to apply for grants towards the work. To date nearly £100,000 has been raised or promised. This includes 2 significant donations from members of the congregation.
With the money we have in hand, work is to begin with the improvements to the north entrance and reception area, the projector, screen and some necessary rewiring. It may be a while before we can start as architect’s advice and the necessary processes to find the right contractors have to be put in place.
We would of course value any donations or bequests towards this project, please speak to our treasurer Jon Hale.
