From earliest times Christians have gathered through the night of Easter to recall the story of God’s saving work, from creation through to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Easter Vigil marks the end of the emptiness of Holy Saturday, and leads into the celebration of Christ’s resurrection.
The service begins in darkness, with scripture readings telling the story of mankind's relationship with God.
Then a bonfire is lit and the New Light declared, marking our passage from darkness to light, through Jesus Christ. The Exsultet is sung, an ancient hymn of triumph and rejoicing, which links this night of our Christian redemption to the Passover night of Israel’s redemption out of Egypt.
Then Jesus's resurrection is proclaimed, all the lights of the church will be lit, and joyful music sung, followed by a Holy Communion service.
Featuring fire, candlelight, and music sung by our robed choir, this is a very special and haunting service, and a wonderful way to start Easter celebrations.
