140th Anniversary of the Consecration of St. Peter's - Memories of the Day

exactly 140 years later

Meet at Church on Wednesday 8th July 2026 at 10am

We plan to encircle the Church with as many arms as possible

to give the Church the biggest hug we can muster,

to give thanks for its presence in the heart of the village.

There will also be a chance to find out why the Mines and School help to tell the story -

Explore the Baptism and Marriage Registers from 1873, 

See photographs of the children and their teachers in 1887

See  the men who worked the mines by hand in 1885

and discover how the abundance

of high quality iron ore, transformed Lindal and Marton.

This special day will not come round again so please come if you can.

Memories of our 140th Anniversary Church Hug.

Sunshine and blue skies blessed St. Peter’s for the awe-inspiring 140th Anniversary Church Hug on the 8th July.

To begin, every child from Lindal and Marton Primary School contributed to a fascinating exploration of the life and times of the village and Church, crowned by wonderful singing of inspirational songs.

Rev. David Goss then led the whole congregation around the outside of the Church to complete the encircling. Everyone first faced the Church to show our love and togetherness, then faced outwards to show our love for the wider world by singing ‘He’s got the whole world in His hands,’ ‘St.Peter’s in His hands’ and finally ‘everybody here’ in His hands.’

Each child joyfully blew bubbles and as the bubbles ascended heavenward a blessing was given and the bell began to ring.

It was a moving moment.

Adults enjoyed a special Anniversary cake inside whilst outside the children enjoyed cakes and juice before setting off back to school in an exemplary manner.

Many reminiscences were exchanged to add to our ever-growing archive. Our thanks to all who continue to enlighten us.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the occasion, to commemorate our remarkable Church.

We succeeded in circling the Church to give it the biggest hug we could muster – a truly memorable day.
