About Us

S. James' Church Coundon is a small friendly church in the Anglo Catholic Tradition. We celebrate all the Major Feasts & Festivals. We have a full range of liturgical vestments and ring out the Regina Coeli and Angelus in season. We use incense at most of our services.

The Church contains the famous "Learning Porch" - A unique project housed within the building for Heritage,Cultural, Educational & Social use for people of all ages. Over £400,000.00 has been spent on upgrading the building over the past 8 years. We are an open church and welcome people of all "shapes and sizes"!

Although a relatively small congregation we are very active in Mission & Outreach and also hold lots of Social Events in our newly created Pilgrim Suite, which is also hired out for functions such as Baptism & Funeral Teas as well as Champagne Wedding Receptions.

Our Priest, Father Gary is the official Chaplain to the local village Primary School - Victoria Lane Academy where he is a familiar figure. The school plays a big role in the life of our church in many ways throughout the year.

Our Parish is a member of The Society & Forward In Faith & We are under the Episcopal Care of The Bishop Of Beverley;

Bishop Glyn Webster.

SAFEGUARDING

S. James’ Coundon Parish is proud to be a part of the Diocese of Durham in the Church of England, whose Archbishops, Bishops, clergy and leaders are absolutely committed to safeguarding as an integral part of the life and ministry of the Church

Safeguarding means the action the Church takes to promote a safer culture. This means we will promote the welfare of children, young people and adults, work to prevent abuse from occurring, seek to protect those that are at risk of being abused and respond well to those that have been abused. We will take care to identify where a person may present a risk to others and offer support to them whilst taking steps to mitigate such risks.

The Church of England affirms the ‘Whole Church’ approach to safeguarding. This approach encompasses a commitment to consistent policy and practice across all Church bodies, Church Officers and that everyone associated with the Church, who comes into contact with children, young people and adults, has a role to play.

The Church will take appropriate steps to maintain a safer environment for all and to practice fully and positively Christ’s Ministry towards children, young people and adults: to respond sensitively and compassionately to their needs in order to keep them safe from harm.

Although safeguarding is the responsibility of everyone here at S. James’ Coundon; Mrs. Denise Stewart is Parish Safeguarding Lead and Safeguarding Officer - she can be contacted about any safeguarding matter on (01388) 605884
