Traditional Evening Prayer (BCP) at 6pm on Sunday 7th September

Occurring
for 1 hour
Venue
St Martin's Church, Barholm-with-Stowe
Address
Main Road Barholm Stamford, PE9 4RA, United Kingdom

Christians have worshiped in the churches of our group for more than 900 years and we are delighted that you have come to share in the tradition of Evensong from the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) 1662 at St Martin's Church here in Barholm.

This evening we will have David and James welcoming you at the porch door, they will give you everything you need to enjoy the service; Hymn Book, Order of Service and a Pew Sheet.

The heart of Evensong is the reading of Scripture.

Fr Aran will lead the Responsorial Psalm, David Brown taking the First Lesson from the Old Testament and Anne Knox taking the New Testament Lesson.

The service that surrounds it is intended to prepare us to hear God’s word and to be able to respond to it with praise.

Its traditional or archaic language may help us to put aside the pressures of our lives as we enter into a tradition that has sustained Christians in England since the 17th Century.

If you are new to this style of worship or unfamiliar with the language, then let us put you at ease. We have tried to include in our Order of Service sufficient instructions to help you take part in the service, alternatively if you’d rather sit and listen then you’re very welcome to be still and let the music and words wash over you.

However you join in, we pray that you sense the presence and love of God.

St Martin's Church, Barholm-with-Stowe

Dear Friends,

Thank you for taking an interest in the Church of St Martin of Tours, Barholm-with-Stowe.

Our next service in St Martin's Church, Barholm with Stowe will be on Sunday 2nd November at 6pm.

Fr Aran will lead us in a service for 'The Commemoration of the Faithful Departed' - Also commonly referred to as 'All Souls Day'.

The names of those to be remembered may be read aloud during this service, although some may prefer to remember those in the silence of our hearts, either way silence may be kept and Candles may be lit as a symbol of placing the persons being remembered into God’s safe keeping. If you would like the names of your departed loved ones read out in church, please add the names to the lists provided in church or email [email protected]

You will be warmly welcomed at the door by James and David, given a Traditional (BCP) Order of Service booklet to follow along with a Hymn Book.

We will follow Seasonal Scripture Readings from regular members of the congregation, these are taken from the Lectionary for All Souls Day. Both the Psalm and the two lessons have a similar theme: Comfort that God is always with us, Repentance, Reflection, Hope in the Resurrection etc.

  • Responsorial - Psalm 23
  • First Lesson - Lamentations 3. 17-26, 31-33
  • Second Lesson - +John 5. 19-25

After which a thoughtful reflection will be given by Fr Aran, Priest of our Seven Villages.

With love, and hope to see you soon,

Carole x
