In celebration of St. Mary's 900th year since its consecration, we have produced a comprehensive book charting its history and association with the village of Whaplode. Over 320 pages/ 200 colour & b/w photos / 81,000 words. Discover the compelling history of this magnificent Norman church. Appreciate the significance of its Anglo-Saxon beginnings; the majesty of its Norman architectural heritage; and the splendour of its historical monuments and artefacts.
Travel down the centuries from the Noble French families helped establish the early Norman church, and those that subsequently supported it, through its ‘ownership’ by the Abbey of Crowland, and the colourful, often turbulent, relationships of the clergy with successive Abbots, and post reformation and the Villagers of Whaplode.
Sense the despair caused by the destruction caused to the fabric during the English Reformation, and beyond with years of regrettable neglect, until, finally, even amidst controversy, early 20th century preservation and restoration projects were finally approved, and with Government help, private and public funds, the future of the church was stabilised, and set fair.
