Sunday Service during Lent
Hillmarton Road, West Holloway
You are warmly welcomed to join us for our 11am Family Service, wherever you find yourself on your faith journey. Please wear a face mask.
Each year at St Luke’s we offer a distinct series of Sunday morning talks to take us through the Lenten season. This year, beginning on the first Sunday in March, our series is called Walk This Way: Signposts and Signals on the Way of Faith
From why we pray to what we believe, each week we’ll take a theme from the Christian story that we might often take for granted… and try and see it through a new lens. As well as three St Luke’s regulars, we’ll have three guest speakers in Malcolm Doney, Ayla Lepine and Liz Adekunle.
Sunday March 6 / Travelling In A Calendar of Faith - Martin Wroe
Sunday March 13 / What’s the Bible for? (and what is it not for?) - Malcolm Doney
Sunday March 20 / What do we believe (and what if we don’t?) - Liz Adekunle
Sunday March 27 / Why do we pray? (and what happens?) - Lizzie Campbell
Sunday April 3 / Saints (and how they’re there for us) - Ayla Lepine
Sunday April 10 / The Church: What is it good for? - Brian Jackson & John MacKenzie
We alternate our livestreaming between this service and our 9.15am said communion. You can find the YouTube link on our website and sign-up to our weekly newsletter to stay up-to-date with all the details (form on our website or email Tina, the parish administrator).

Vox Holloway Community Choir
Hillmarton Road, West Holloway
Vox Holloway (Latin: “the voice of Holloway”) began in 2009 as a community choral society for all – no auditions, no professions of faith or previous experience of choral singing required – with St Luke’s as its home. It includes participants from far and wide who wouldn't necessarily consider setting foot in a church.
At its first concert, ‘The Messiah’ in December 2009, the choir raised £6,000 for the Umthombo Street Children project in Durban South Africa. At its second, ‘Requiem in Blue’ by Harvey Brough, performed on Palm Sunday, it raised £14,000 for the DEC Haiti appeal. Both were performed to a packed house.
Its director, Justin Butcher, who's also the organist and choirmaster at St Luke’s, says:
“I think my key inspiration is my conviction that singing, perhaps more than any other art form, connects us most profoundly to the mystery of who and what we are – body, mind and spirit – at the same time as connecting us to each other. It’s a crime that so many people grow up thinking they can’t sing and miss out on something that should be both fun, creative and sociable but also a primal encounter with the Divine in the midst of life.”
Rehearsals are every Tuesday at 7.30pm at the church - term time. Sign up at voxholloway.com.
Voices Singing Workshop, with Angela Reith
Hillmarton Road, West Holloway
Voices Singing Workshop is on Wednesday evenings (term time) in the church at 8pm.
Voices is a drop-in non-performing singing group for complete beginners and experienced singers alike, of age 16 and over. It’s for anyone who loves to sing or who thinks they can’t sing but would like to. There are no auditions and no one has to be able to read music: we sing for the love of it, and learn songs by ear in glorious harmony.
Singing in a group is not only great fun: it’s very good for physical and mental well-being; it helps to improve breathing; and it’s great at giving lonely people a sense of belonging.
The weekly cost is £10 full income, £5 low income or whatever you can afford
Please contact Angela for dates & to book: [email protected]
Fourth Sunday Evening
Hillmarton Road, West Holloway
On the fourth Sunday evening of the month (not December) we meet in the church for a candlelit services of quiet, drawing on Celtic chants and liturgies from The Iona Community.
We sit in a round and create space for silence and to pray for each other and our world.
On alternate fourth Sundays (November, January, March etc) this service is focussed on Prayers for Healing. We name people who would like healing ‘in body, mind or spirit’. If you would like someone’s name to be included (or your own) or to name a community or country, please email [email protected]
The Iona Abbey Service Book explains the service like this: ‘We each stand in need of healing, but in this service we also recognise the social dimension. The healing of divided communities and nations, the healing of the earth itself, have their place alongside the healing of broken bodies, hurt minds and wounded hearts, and of the hurts and divisions within ourselves. Our prayers are complementary to the work of medicine and other forms of healing which are also channels of God’s loving and transforming purpose.’
