This chapel, to the North side of the Chancel, was founded in 1460 by the Booth family of the Manor of Barton on Irwell. 

Rich and talented they produced a number of prominent churchmen including: 

William Booth, Archbishop of York 1452 - 1464
John Bothe, Bishop of Exeter 1465 - 1478
Laurence Booth, Archbishop of York 1476 - 1480
Charles Booth, Bishop of Hereford 1516 - 1535

In 1548, its use as a Catholic place of worship was suppressed. However, in 1576 it passed to another local Catholic family, the de Trafford’s, who are thought to have used it as a Catholic place of worship adjacent to the now Protestant main church, perhaps using a separate entrance through the current vestry!

Originally called the Jesus Chapel, it was renovated and renamed in 1943 following a bequest by the daughter of Canon Pitcairn (vicar 1861 - 1892), who was responsible for the extensive rebuilding of the Chancel in 1861.
