Blessèd are you, creator God; to you be glory and praise for ever. Your Spirit moved over the face of the waters to bring light and life to your creation. Pour out your Spirit on us this day, that we may walk as children of light and by your grace reveal your presence,
Blessed be God Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
Blessèd be God for ever :

Song of Praise -

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart,
Be all else but naught to me, save that thou art,
Be thou my best thought in the day and the night,
Both waking and sleeping, thy presence my light.

High King of heaven, thou heaven's bright Sun,
O grant me its joys after vict'ry is won, Great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all.

Other Hymns may be used

Canticle

Christ, as a light illumine and guide me.
Christ, as a shield overshadow me.
Christ under me;Christ over me;
Christ beside me on my left and my right.
This day be within and without me,
lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.
Be in the heart of each to whom I speak;
in the mouth of each who speaks unto me.
 This day be within and without me,
 lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.
Christ as a light; Christ as a shield;
 Christ beside me on my left and my right.

Benedictus

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty saviour,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Luke Chapter 2

Prayer at Midday or Later in the Afternoon

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,

Whose strong hands were skilled

At the plane and the lathe,

Be there at our labours,

And give us, we pray,

Your strength in our hearts, Lord,

At the noon of the day

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,

Your hands swift to welcome,

Your arms to embrace,

Be there at our homing,

And give us, we pray,

Your love in our hearts, Lord,

At the eve of the day.

Lord

Your Presence is in my Life

Your Presence is Peace

Your presence is in my Mind

Your Presence is all around me

Your Presence is Peace

Your presence is in My Heart

Your Presence is all around me

Your Presence is Peace

Psalm

Psalm 139.1–11, 16, 17 or Ps 23 or another

Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar.

You trace my journeys and my resting-places

and are acquainted with all my ways.

Indeed, there is not a word on my lips,

but you, O Lord, know it altogether.

You press upon me behind and before

and lay your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;

it is so high that I cannot attain to it.

Where can I go then from your Spirit?

where can I flee from your presence?

If I climb up to heaven, you are there;

if I make the grave my bed, you are there also.

If I take the wings of the morning

and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

Even there your hand will lead me

and your right hand hold me fast.

If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will cover me,

and the light around me turn to night’,

Darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day; darkness and light to you are both alike.

How deep I find your thoughts, O God!

how great is the sum of them!

If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand; to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Scripture

Jesus said come to me you who are weary and carry heavy burdens and I will give you rest

Matthew 11*28

Magnificat

this may be used later in the afternoon

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on his humble servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed, the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation.He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the humble.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

maker of all to you we pray,

who reigns with you forever more.

or earlier in the evening

Hail gladdening light Lord Jesus Christ,
In you the Fathers glory shone.
Immortal, Holy blest is he,
And blest are you, his holy Son

Now sunset comes, but light shines forth
The lamps are lit to pierce the night, Praise Father, Son and Spirit, God Who in the darkness gives us light.

Worthy are you of endless praise,
O Son of God, life giving Lord
Wherefore you are through all the earth
And in the highest heaven adored.
