Churchyard Project - Nearly Complete!

For the last 25 weeks, we have undertaken a major civil engineering project to resolve the problem with drainage from the churchyard which caused the collapse of the boundary wall with Glebe House in December 2019. Undertaken by AD Williams Contractors the project has involved extensive excavations in the churchyard, which in turn required the removal and re-interment of several graves; construction of a 4m high gabion basket wall; excavations to extend drainage from the church downpipes across the grounds of Glebe House garden below to the natural watercourse. Some 320 tons of earth have been removed from site, with a significant proportion of new backfill and topsoil returned. Works undertaken on Glebe House property are now completed but there are two drainage elements outstanding in the churchyard - awaiting the delivery of parts which the contractors will return to fit. We will then book the road sweeper to clean George's Lane from the farm road to the church entrance and Rectory Drive (the private drive to the North of the church). The eastern end of the churchyard will remain closed until Spring to allow the ground and new turf to recover. During the project the church car park has been used as the Contractors' compound and whilst it has been returned to us, the re-surfacing is still soft as a result of the weeks of wet weather so please drive slowly!! We would like to thank everyone - particularly our neighbours - for their patience during these works.
