A Service of Celebration and Dedication will be held on Wednesday 27th August 10am St Mary’s Church What are we celebrating? The Right Reverend David Williams, is coming to St Mary’s Church, Biscovey to dedicate a new beautifully engraved glass panel in the porch. The engraved glass panel became a reality in 2019, once the major tower and spire repairs had been completed. It was mentioned among the team of fundraisers that we had nothing to record how diligently the congregation had worked, or how supportive the local community, as well as grant funders had been in raising the £100,000 set by the Heritage Lottery Fund to enable us to obtain the HLF grant to make the major repairs to the crumbling tower and spire. A few suggestions were muted and eventually an agreement was made to create an engraved glass panel showing the church tower and spire with some appropriate wording celebrating the completion and support of the community. Lengthy legal paper work had to be sought owing to the grade 2* listing of St Mary’s. The original stained-glass windows of St Mary’s form such an important history of stained-glass windows in Cornish Churches, so to have the opportunity to enhance the beauty of the building with a further unique window was a real privilege, as was finding a local glass engraver who had the imagination and talent to create such a composition. Patricia Hilton - Robinson of Portscatho was recommended, and what an excellent engraver she proved to be! Her finished product is a true work of art and captures the tower and spire as well as the trees around the churchyard. Its position in the foyer of the church is a constant reminder of the generosity of all those who contributed to the project. We hope it will be appreciated by all who visit now, and in the future. The service on 27th August will be one of celebration, not just for the glass panel and the improved sound of the Squire organ, but for 175 years of worship in this place. All are welcome to attend. A light lunch and a celebration cake will follow the service.
