The Organ

The organ dates back from 1859, and was rebuilt in 1862. In 1935 additional stops were added by organ builder John Oakes & Son, including Trumpet 8 and Large Open Diapason 8. An electric blower added and angled stop jambs installed, a new Radiating Concave pedal-board added and balanced Swell pedal created.

By 1980, many parts of the organ were becoming unplayable, and repairs using second hand pipework took place.

The location of this organ was also proving an issue for Organists, as playing with their backs to the service, proving difficult. Many of the rank of pipes were or beyond repair. The Old Organ and the pipes were left and are still in the existing position today.

In 2009, a brand-new Organ was commissioned by Makin Organs and the location of the Organ Console was moved to the current position, adjacent to the seating area. The sound from the organ, is now situated on the balcony, giving a clearer and better experience for the congregation and audience. In additional Choir and Crescendo Pedal were added, and a computerised stop memory and playback system were also added.
