£13,192 raised for Burundi in 2024

Burundi remains one of the world’s most impoverished countries with 87% population living below the World Bank’s poverty line of $1.90 per day.

For 15 years, we supported the work of FH (Food for the Hungry) in the community of Mwumba (a community of 4,850 households in northern Burundi). In August 2024, a team of six from Wadhurst attended the ‘graduation ceremony’ of the programme to celebrate all that has been achieved. Sponsors continue to the work of FH Burundi in the community of Mubavu.

Mwumba is situated in the Anglican Diocese of Buye, and a strong relationship has been established with Archbishop Sixbert Macumi, who has visited Wadhurst on several occasion, including a visit to Wadhurst Primary School in 2015. In August 2024, we visited Buye Lycee, a secondary school with 352 students (including 189 boarders) attending. Urgent work was needed to build septic tanks to improve sanitation and enable the school to open in September 2024. The Burundi Link enabled the school to build new septic tanks and rehabilitate two dormitories.

The Bethesda Project, in the neighbouring Anglican Diocese of Muyinga, is another project visited by the team. The project is identifying and helping disabled children living in the parishes. We are exploring ways of addressing the common problem of malnutrition affecting many of their 400 clients.
