Thought for the week of 13th August 2023

“After He had dismissed the crowds , He went up the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came He was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning He came walking towards them on the lake”  Matthew 14 : 27

Readings this week :

I Kings 19 : 9 - 18

Romans 10 : 5 - 15

Matthew 14 : 22 - 33

Thought for the week :

Jesus’ walking on water was a truly miraculous event. This was not even a stroll across still water, but the boat carrying the disciples was being ”battered by the waves”. It was perhaps, for many people, after the Resurrection, Jesus’ single most powerful and breath – taking miracle. It is certainly one that everyone remembers.

It is such a testament to Jesus’ power and authority, even over nature itself. It is a witness to Jesus’ compassion and love for His disciples, including each of us who are disciples today. It is the call to believe, and to grow in faith for all who hear the Word. It is evidence of how Jesus has come to turn the world upside down, and challenge every man, woman and child into faith and following.

It shows how the Lord is not remote from us. When Jesus saw the disciples were in trouble he was far away, a mountain. Yet he came to them. Even walking on the water, to be with them, to reassure them, to show He is always close.

This is the reality of Jesus. He is the Lord who has drawn close, coming from heaven, shares our lives, offers us His hope. This is the Lord’s love. Jesus who offers His love in every situation.
