5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Show us how to increase our faith.” 6 The Lord answered, “If you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘May you be uprooted and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you! Luke 17 : 5 - 6Readings this week Habbakuk 1 : 1 – 4, 2 : 1 - 4; 2 Timothy 1 : 1 - 14; Luke 17 : 5 - 10Some thoughts for this weekThe Lord does provide! Yet so often we need faith to keep praying, to be patient, and to have eyes to see the answer when it has arrived! We have a newly designated Archbishop of Canterbury. The appointment has come after a great deal of prayer, of patience and waiting. Sarah Mullally is the Bishop of London, and comes with huge experience of the Lord’s compassion and love, first as Chief Nursing Officer for the UK, and now in Episcopal ministry.I believe it is an affirmation not only of her ministry as a priest, but also of Jesus’ compassion and concern for His church as the Good Shepherd who loves His church, and longs to care for us, nurture us and lead us as we seek to live out our faith in this difficult and broken world. The church prayed for a leader, and the Lord has answered with someone who knows what it is to minister to people in desperate need, and comfort the dying and bereaved.Jesus calls us to look to Him and to follow Him. To know that He answers our prayers and hears the cries of our hearts. When we are faithful and believe, we become the church that reflects Jesus. Our compassionate, faithful, loving and forgiving Lord. Rev Paul A Blessing based on 2 Timothy 1: 1-14 :As you go from here, may God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace. Do not let your faith or your witness grow cold.Remember: God’s gift of faithis like a flame;when the embers of that flame have cooled, you must fan them again to keep them ablaze. So remember what you have been taught and what you have experienced. Live in such a way that all who know you may see the light of God reflected in you.And may the grace of God, the love of Jesus Christ, and the presence of the Holy Spirit be with you and among you in the days ahead. Amen.We praise the Lord and give thanks for…The miraculous completion of the three projects at St Eds. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you. 1 Timothy 6 : 11 - 12Readings this week Amos 6 : 1a, 4 - 7; 1 Timothy 6 : 6 - 19; Luke 16 : 19 - endSome thoughts for this weekThe image on the front this week dates from 1989. It is an invitation to pray at the time before the Berlin Wall fell. A time of heightened tension, St Nikolai Church in Leipzig began to host ‘Monday Prayers for Peace’. The gatherings began with 5 or 6 people. During the Autumn many more joined. By October 9th 70,000 had turned up, with the message from Isaiah 2 : 4 of swords into ploughshares. These were prayers for peace. In our Gospel reading Jesus tells of a man who has cut himself off from other people, from God Himself, from any hope. It has come about through greed and a hardened heart without compassion. It is a tragic picture, and hard to contemplate. Yet a reminder to us to constantly open our hearts and lives to the truth of who Jesus is and all He has won for us through His love, His Cross and His resurrection.Prayer opens our lives to other people, to the beauty of God’s world, and to His love for us each day. This is Creationtide when we look closely at the reality of the Lord’s love through His creation. How is prayer opening our hearts today? To Jesus’ words? To the beauty of creation? To the needs of others? Prayer is a gift for us and others to lead fuller lies in Jesus’ love. Rev Paul Prayers for this weekGod, who in generous mercy sent the Holy Spirit upon your Church in the burning fire of your love: grant that your people may be fervent in the fellowship of the gospel that, always abiding in you, they may be found steadfast in faith and active in service; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, AmenLord God, defend your Church from all false teaching and give to your people knowledge of your truth, that we may enjoy eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord, AmenPeople to pray forFor ecologists, environmentalists, scientists and Governments involved with climate issues and climate changeFor poorer nations as they try to cope with harsher conditions for their farmers
