CANDLEMAS SERVICE

Occurring
for 1 hour
Venue
All Saints Thurcaston with Cropston
Address
Anstey Lane Thurcaston Leicester, LE7 7JA, United Kingdom

A choral service with an augmented choir will be held at 6.30pm on Sunday 1st February to celebrate Candlemas. There will be readings and hymns and then the service will conclude with the singing of the ancient plainsong setting of Compline.
Candlemas is an ancient festival which marks the midpoint of winter, halfway between the shortest day and the spring equinox. It commemorates the purification of Mary forty days after the birth of her son Jesus. It is also the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ in the Temple, based on the account in Luke 2:22-40. It was the Jewish custom forty days after birth of a boy, to take him to the temple to be presented to God by his thankful parents. It is also officially the end of the Christmas cycle.
