Following the successful premiere of their version of Rend Collective’s ‘My Lighthouse’ in an online February service, the Saturday Singers – a children’s community choir at Bradford Cathedral – will be performing two more pieces in March.

The group will be singing ‘Our God Saves’ for Mothering Sunday – Sunday 14th March 2021 – and for Palm Sunday – two weeks later on the 28th March – ‘Hosanna’. These performances can be watched during the services, or on catch-up afterwards, via the Bradford Cathedral website and YouTube channel.

Libby Harborne, Choral Scholar and leader of the Saturday Singers group, said about their first performance just before it premiered:
“Since the start of term, we have been working on this video project. We meet once a week, virtually, to sing together and it has been a real highlight of my week spending time with the children, seeing them enjoy themselves and watching their confidence flourish.

“I chose this song as the theme of a lighthouse shining in the darkness fits really well with this weeks reading in 2 Corinthians 4:6. It also reminds us that in difficult times, such as these, God is steadfast. In stormy seas, we can find inner peace through trusting Him.

“The children recorded all their vocal parts and videos separately and I had the privilege of putting them all together to create this final video. I would like to commend them on their huge effort, overcoming some nerves and remembering a lot of actions! I’m sure you’ll agree the end product is a fantastic achievement.

“The song is “My Lighthouse” by Rend Collective. It’s fun and upbeat, guaranteed to get your toes tapping. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we have had making it.”

Alex Berry, Director of Music at Bradford Cathedrals, says of the upcoming pieces:
“'It is wonderful that the Saturday Singers are contributing to these amazing new recordings. I'm especially pleased to see how much the children are enjoying singing contemporary worship music, and Libby's choices have really uplifted our worship.

“The Saturday Singers meet every Wednesday at 4.30pm. They're currently online but are looking forward to meeting in the building as soon as possible. We always welcome new members, so if you're a primary school child who loves to sing, please be in contact - there's no audition and we'd be delighted to have you on board.”

The new name for the Saturday Singers will also be revealed on Mothering Sunday following an online competition to re-name them after their rehearsals moved to a Wednesday.
