‘Jesus- Guru, Avatar, God?’ is an exhibition of two works from the Methodist Modern Art Collection; The Crucifixion by Francis N Souza, and Dalit Madonna by Jyoti Sahi (pictured). The pieces are selected to reflect on the person of Jesus as depicted from other faith perspectives.

The two paintings by Sahi and Souza respectively displayed at Bradford Cathedral illustrate the city of Bradford’s long association with South Asian arts and heritage, and the variety of styles and subject matter found within the Methodist Modern Art Collection. It is a privilege to display Souza’s The Crucifixion, the first acquisition to the MMAC in 1962.

– There will be an opening event on Saturday 6th September at 3.30pm.
– Join us for a lecture entitled ‘Seeing the Spiritual: The Story of the Methodist Modern Art Collection’ on the Wednesday 10th September at 7.30pm.
– Dr Alice Correia will present an In Conversation event discussing the life and work of Francis N Souza on Friday 3rd October at 6pm.

Everything is Connected
These paintings are on display as part of ‘Everything is Connected’, a trail of exhibitions and hidden reproductions covering the city of Bradford and the surrounding area.

As part of Bradford’s City of Culture 2025 celebrations, five venues in the Methodist Church’s Yorkshire West District are exhibiting artworks held in the Methodist Modern Art Collection (MMAC), enabling conversations around faith, hidden or overlooked histories, and diverse and marginalised heritage. There is also a series of
reproductions of works in the Collection that can be seen at bars and cafés along North Parade in Bradford City Centre.

While each venue has its own theme, they are all linked via the Everything is Connected Art Trail. https://ywmethodist.org.uk/bradford2025/

Join us for a special 'In Conversation' talk, as part of our 'Global Connections' series of events.

Professor Ann Sumner discusses the life and work of the Goan-born artist, Francis Newton Souza, with Dr Alice Correia, an independent curator, scholar and art historian whose research examines F N Souza's interest in Christian imagery particularly looking at his Crucifixion pictures.

Dr Correia was part of the Transforming Collections: Reimagining Art, Nation and Heritage project at the Decolonising Arts Institute, University of the Arts, London. The three-year project sought to surface structural inequalities, biases and absences in public collections of modern and contemporary art across the UK. Correia's work focused on when and how institutions acquired, displayed and interpreted works by artists of South Asian heritage.

Seeing the Spiritual: The Story of the Methodist Modern Art Collection

Venue
Bradford Cathedral

Join us for a lecture entitled 'Seeing the Spiritual: The Story of the Methodist Modern Art Collection', as part of our 'Global Connections' series of events.

You are invited to meet at 7pm for light refreshments, with the lecture beginning at 7:30pm for around an hour, with a Q&A session following.

About the lecture
The Methodist Modern Art Collection is the Methodist Church's response to the flourishing of religious art in post-war Britain. In the early 1960s it was the inspired initiative of a Methodist layman, Dr John Morel Gibbs (1912 – 1996) from South Wales who began collecting with his friend the Revd Douglas Wollen (1909 – 1998) and quickly assembled a group of outstanding paintings illustrating aspects of the gospel narrative from Nativity to Pentecost, with strengths in British 20th Century art. Although influenced by the artworks commissioned for Llandaff and Coventry Cathedrals, their unique Methodist approach was to create a touring collection that would be seen across the country in art galleries, churches and cathedrals. Their inspired collecting is illustrated by their first acquisition in 1962 - an example South Asian art by F N Souza – his powerful Crucifixion which is on loan to Bradford Cathedral for Bradford 2025.

In this Friends of the MMAC lecture, the Chair of the Methodist Modern Art Collection, art historian Professor Ann Sumner tells the unique story of the Collection which included well-known British 20th Century artists such as Edward Burra, Elizabeth Frink, Peter Howson and has expanded to now include works by Patrick Heron and Maggi Hambling, as well as world art by Jyoti Sahi, John Muafangejo, and Sadao Watanabe.

This year we are focussing on female stained glass and textile designers whose work appears in Bradford Cathedral.

There will be a self-guided tour available, as well as a general tour and a specialist tour relating to the female designers, each taking place at 12:15pm and 2:15pm.

Alongside these there will be children's activities, refreshments at the Pop-Up Café and a talk at 1pm by Helen Elletson from the William Morris Society about May Morris.

Talk: ‘A Remarkable Woman’: The Extraordinary Life and Career of May Morris (Helen Mary Elletson)
Overshadowed for many years by her more famous father, May Morris is now beginning to gain the recognition she deserves as being an incredibly talented craftswoman in her own right. Teacher, lecturer, editor, jeweller and designer, May was accomplished in a wide range of crafts, but it is her work as an embroiderer that is considered to be her greatest achievement. May’s knowledge of needlework, her talent for designing and her brilliance with the needle led to raising the status of embroidery to fine art. This talk will cover May’s life and work, with a focus on her beautiful designs and completed embroideries, demonstrating why May should be regarded as one of the most significant artists of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
