St Barnabas Adopts a Rule of Life

christmas

Advent Sunday marks the beginning of a new Christian year. At the Sunday Service, the Vicar Revd Steve Cook is calling upon the entire church to adopt a rule of life for one year. It is based on simplicity and designed for people in the 21 century with just six points: pray, study the bible, worship, tell others, serve other and give to others.

Everyone received a postcard outlining those six aspects (3 are inward and 3 are outward disciplines) and in the near future we will give everyone a fridge magnet. The rule is based on that put forward by the Bishop of Liverpool, Paul Bayes, with some slight adjustments for the context in Eltham.

At the service, the vicar asked everyone who wished to join him in keeping the rule for one year to signify by raising their hand. 100% of the adults present indicated their desire to do so. The vicar prayed that they would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit to encourage them over the months ahead.
