Holy Communion

PLEASE NOTE that as from November 2025, the Wednesday Holy Communion service will resume being a weekly event and we look forward to welcoming regular attendees and newcomers alike as Rev Mark takes up his ministry among us.

Lunchtime THE PRAYER COURSE

Every Wednesday at for 1 hour, 30 mins
St. Barnabas church

An eight-week course on prayer, with a short film, discussion and time to pray together. No experience needed, and you do not have to pray aloud.

Wednesdays from 16 September to 4 November at St Barnabas. There are two identical sessions each week, 1.00pm and 7.30pm, so come to whichever suits you better. Books are provided.

The course follows the Lord's Prayer:
16 September - Why Pray? (Lord, teach us to pray)
23 September - Adoration (Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name)
30 September - Petition (Give us this day our daily bread)
7 October - Intercession (Your kingdom come)
14 October - Unanswered Prayer (Your will be done)
21 October - Contemplation (On earth as it is in heaven)
28 October - Listening (Give us this day our daily bread)
4 November - Spiritual Warfare (Deliver us from evil)

Bishop's Area Vocations Day

Beat and Beans

FREE event - live music, a variety of refreshments and space to chat. In September we shall welcome back the Yardarm Folk Orchestra to entertain us. You are welcome to come and go as you please.

Messy Church (at St. Barnabas)

Messy Church is a way of being Church for families and others. It is Christ-centred, for all ages, based on creativity, hospitality and celebration. There are activities to get involved in, a Bible story and a meal to enjoy together. Everything is free to partake in, though donations are always welcome. There will be no meeting in August.

Illumination - a free exhibition of biblical calligraphy

Illumination is a free exhibition of biblical calligraphy and illuminated manuscripts, at St James the Less on Saturday 24 October, 10.00am to 3.00pm.

At its centre are facsimile volumes of The Saint John's Bible - a modern handwritten and illuminated Bible, seven volumes in all, lettered and decorated by hand. You can see the pages close up, and find out how biblical texts were written, decorated and illustrated long before the printed page.

Entry is free and everyone is welcome, whether you come to church or not. Children are very welcome.

School groups: St James is open to schools by appointment from Monday 19 to Friday 23 October, free of charge, with a hands-on session in calligraphy and illumination. It links well to RE, history and art. Please contact the Revd Mark Smeed on 01268 211009 or [email protected].

The same exhibition is at St Peter's, Thundersley the week before - schools from Monday 12 to Friday 16 October, and open to the public on Saturday 17 October, 10.00am to 3.00pm.
