About Us

Our History

St Margaret’s Church has stood at the heart of Stanford-le-Hope for over 800 years. The original Norman building dates from around 1180, with significant additions in the 13th and 14th centuries including the north and south aisles, chancel, and clerestory. The south porch was added in the 16th century and the tower and west front were rebuilt during the Victorian era.

The church is dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch and is a Grade I listed building. Throughout its history it has served as the parish church for the communities of Stanford-le-Hope and Mucking, and remains an active place of worship and community life today.

Programs and Services

St Margaret’s provides regular worship and a range of community activities:

• Sunday morning worship every week at 10:15am, open to all

• Baptisms, weddings, and funerals — pastoral support for major life events

• Tuesday Tots — a weekly parent and toddler group

• St Margaret’s Church Hall — available for hire by community groups, local organisations, and private events

• Pastoral visiting and support for those in need

• Seasonal services including Harvest, Remembrance, Christmas, and Easter

• Safeguarding — we follow the Church of England’s safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure the safety of all, particularly children and vulnerable adults

About St Margaret’s

St Margaret’s Church is the Church of England parish church for Stanford-le-Hope with Mucking, in the Diocese of Chelmsford. We are a registered charity (no. 1132298) governed by the Parochial Church Council (PCC).

Our church building sits on The Green in the centre of Stanford-le-Hope, and we also operate St Margaret’s Church Hall as a community venue.

Our Rector is Revd Tom Rout, supported by two churchwardens and a dedicated team of volunteers who together oversee worship, pastoral care, building management, and community activities.

Everyone is welcome at St Margaret’s — whether you are looking for a place to worship, marking a life event, or simply want to be part of a caring community.
