Illumination - a free exhibition of biblical calligraphy

Occurring
for 5 hours
Venue
St Peter's Church
Address
Church Road Thundersley Benfleet, SS7 3HG, United Kingdom

Illumination is a free exhibition of biblical calligraphy and illuminated manuscripts, at St Peter's on Saturday 17 October, 10.00am to 3.00pm.

At its centre are facsimile volumes of The Saint John's Bible - a modern handwritten and illuminated Bible, seven volumes in all, lettered and decorated by hand. You can see the pages close up, and find out how biblical texts were written, decorated and illustrated long before the printed page.

Entry is free and everyone is welcome, whether you come to church or not. Children are very welcome.

School groups: St Peter's is open to schools by appointment from Monday 12 to Friday 16 October, free of charge, with a hands-on session in calligraphy and illumination. It links well to RE, history and art. Please contact the Revd Mark Smeed on 01268 211009 or [email protected].

The same exhibition is at St James the Less, Hadleigh the week after - schools from Monday 19 to Friday 23 October, and open to the public on Saturday 24 October, 10.00am to 3.00pm.

St Peter's Church

You are very welcome at St Peter's, the parish church of Thundersley. We stand at the top of the hill in Church Road, with far-reaching views, set in a large and peaceful churchyard among the trees, and our church field adjoins Coombe Wood.

Sundays at 8.00am and 11.00am

Holy Communion at 8.00am is held in the oldest part of the church. Our 11.00am Sung Eucharist is in the main worship area, which seats around two hundred.

During the week

Our midweek services are listed further down this page.
