Roof Repair 2026

St Mary's is again requiring urgent repair.

Three smaller rooves on the church are still in need of repair and were beyond our means when repairing the nave 5 years ago. These rooves are the two porches : North and South (which is now the washroom) and also the vestry roof.  You may well have realised this yourself from visiting the washroom, the roof timbers are rotting and the inside walls is now a rain-sump.  All three rooves are surfaced in lead which is over 150 years old, hence too brittle and beyond repair. They are all leaking (like a sieve!!) and the timbers underneath all are damaged and suffering wet-rot.

We have obtained competitive quotes and finally approval from the church diocese to go ahead with the repair.

The cost of the repairs is £68k.

Of note is the VAT, in previous years we were able to reclaim the entirety of this, this scheme has been rescinded unfortunately, and we need to pay full 20% rate.

The church currently has limited funds, they are almost all consumed in our £20k p.a. running costs. This said as a result of a stewardship programme and a series of village fundraisers this year we have raised £1,500 towards the roof repairs.

We have now raised a further £21,000 from 3 other grant providers.

We are unable to go ahead without obtaining the balance from donors.  We are working hard to secure the balance. We are unable to proceed until we secure this, if you know someone who can help us here, or indeed help yourself do please let us know.

With thanks,

BW
