Gospel: John 10: 1-10

In our Gospel reading Jesus alikens himself to not only a shepherd, but also the gate through which sheep can exit a pen. Through Jesus and by Jesus, we are led to true freedom and pasture. In our reading from Acts we see a snapshot of the early church, the first believers who were baptised by the apostles after Pentecost.
Like the sheep in Jesus' parable that follow the shepherd because they know his voice, the early christians recognised the truth in the apostles' teachings, and heard the call of Jesus. A shepherd does not have a single sheep, but a flock. In Acts 2 we read about the importance of the communal life and fellowship of the body of believers.
Our reading from Acts ends with the line "And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." And Jesus outlines in John 10 the means of this salvation - through him.
