Church History

Very early records of the churches connect with Tamworth have not survived and so the earliest mention of a chapel/church existing at Amington is during the reign of King Stephen (1135-1154) .

We know that by the fifteenth century (after the Black Death) a stone church was built on The Green in Amington Village but this fell into ruin.

On 23rd October 1836 Amington Chapel of Ease was opened but 26 years later because the congregation having increased, it was decided to enlarge the Chapel, the architect Mr George Edmund Street advised that it should be rebuilt and so the  Chapel of Ease came to an end!

The Consecration of the current church building took place on Tuesday 25th October 1864 at 2pm.

The Church is built in the Gothic style and has stained glass windows designed by Burne-Jones.

We are blessed to have Mr Michael Ackroyd; local Historian and author as our Organist and it is by his permission that the Church History information contained within his publication 'A guide and history of the church of Saint Editha Amington is reproduced.
