Weekly News - 28th May 2023

This weekend’s Bible reading:

Acts 2:1-21 (p 1093)

Welcome to our visitors:

This Sunday we welcome Elsie, her parents and God-parents, family and friends.

Elsie will be baptised during our 10.30 service.

Please also welcome Huw, who will be playing the organ for us at both the morning and the evening services.

Please remember that Jeff and Jo are happy for us to use the car park of the Star during our morning services, as long as cars are moved by 12.00 (unless, of course, you’re lunching in the pub!)

Songs of Praise Service 28th May at 6.30:

Do come along to St Mary's at 6.30pm, when members of our three churches will be introducing their favourite hymns and saying why they are special to them. Huw Jenkins will be at the organ, helping us to raise the roof.

Mothers’ Union 31st May:

The next meeting of Braughing with Standon Mothers' Union will be on Wednesday at 2.30pm in the Old Boys School, Braughing. Judy James will talk about the ’Godly mothers in the Bible’. Everyone is invited to this meeting. Please ring Diane on 821130 for more information.

Alpha Course:

We will be joining in with the Alpha Course in Thorley on Wednesdays from 13 September. Please pray about this and especially if you can invite anyone along. We hope that we will be able to take a group from our benefice. Please speak to John for more information.

Midweek Music at St Mary’s, 24th May:

Thank you to all who supported last week’s Midweek concert at St Mary’s. This month, the soloist, trumpeter Stuart Dodgson, requested that the retiring collection should go to Macmillan Cancer Support. We are pleased to report the wonderful sum of £349 was raised. Next month’s concert will be on 28th June, when Rebecca Watts (Rebecca Legg) will be playing the harp.

Two events for garden lovers on 10th June:

The annual Open Gardens event will take place in Standon, starting at 11.00 am and finishing at 5.00 pm. Posters and fliers are available in all our churches.

At 7.30 pm Sacombe will host a talk by Graham Burton, the gardener at Sacombe House, entitled ‘Restoring a Devon Garden’. There will be refreshments afterwards. More details will follow nearer the time.

Oasis Women’s Morning 17th June:

We will host a morning of renewal, refreshment, worship, Bible study and testimony from 10.00 until 1.00 on Saturday 17th June in All Saints Church. Why not step aside and come together with others to spend some time with God? More details are available from Gaby (07821 546518) or Deborah (07956 686749).

‘Persuasion’ at Brockholds Manor 1st July:

DOT Productions is proud to present this new adaptation based on Jane Austen’s final novel ‘Persuasion’. This production is told in DOT's usual multi-roleplaying style and we hope it will delight all Austen fans. The performance is on Saturday 1st July and you can book through Hugh or via the website (booking fee applies): www.brockholdsmanor.com/event- details/brockholds-manor-garden-theatre-3. Gates will open at 5 p.m. Tickets include Prosecco on arrival and a two course Buffet supper. There will be a licensed Bar offering wine and Pimms, and coffee & tea will be available. They are £45 per head or £40 per person in a car of 4 persons or more. All profits from this year's performance will go towards the major works required on the roof of All Saints Church, Little Munden.

Website:

Our benefice website is on the www.achurchnearyou.com platform. The benefice page can’t currently be reached but you can find the three churches individually by going to https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/7825/ and clicking the links there.
