Standon Flower festival: Thank you to all who contributed in any way to the flower festival in St Mary’s last weekend, culminating in a wonderful Songs of Praise service on Sunday evening. Many people visited and were moved as well as impressed. It wasn’t intended particularly as a fund raiser, but more than £3,400 was received in donations, ticket sales for the Gala evening and teas purchased! Marion writes: ‘May I send my heartfelt thanks to every single person who played a part in the wonderfully successful Flower Festival held at St Mary's last weekend. This includes flower arrangers; cleaners; refreshment providers and servers; those who prepared the floral carpet; our organists, harpist and flute ensemble; those who provided plants, greenery or loaned items; the bellringers; those who delivered leaflets and put up posters and banners; lighting and technical support; printers; our treasurer; welcomers and stewards; our local schools; those who facilitated our ministry of welcome to children; those who watered and sprayed flowers and plants; those who took part in our Songs of Praise service; those who helped with the massive job of clearing up and last, but by no means least, those who visited over the weekend. Also a personal thank you to Michael, for his patience and hard work throughout, alongside his usual work commitments. It was a tremendous festival and fulfilled the vision I had for it to be an act of outreach and hospitality to our local community.’ Sunday lunch at the Star: This will not be available this month as The Star are not taking bookings for food on that Sunday because of Standon Calling. Our next Sunday lunch will be on 28th August. Jeff has reduced our number to 8 as we have had a drop in numbers over the last few months. If you haven’t had a chance yet to admire the displays, please do so. On Monday, the great dismantling will start! Refreshments will be available in the Village Hall from 2 until 5 pm while the festival is on. There will be music in church during the Flower Festival. Do come along and enjoy the music and flowers! Sunday 10th July 'Flute cocktail' - a flute ensemble will play music for half an hour on the hour at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm. Join us to sing Songs Of Praise at 6.30pm in church. Hymns and songs chosen and introduced by members of our congregations and sung by us all! Knit & Natter group: If you like knitting or crocheting, come and join us for a couple of hours in Standon village hall at 2pm usually on the 2nd Thursday of each month. There was a good discussion and most would rather continue as we are. However, a significant minority would like to return to receiving the wine from the chalice. There will thus be no change this week or next (when there is a baptism at Little Munden as well as Holy Communion) but after that we will try to provide a choice and see how it goes. This will mean two “stations”, one to receive the “intincted” (dipped) wafer, and another to receive from the cup. The Church of England has given very little restriction on these matters but one which continues is that there shall be no “self-intinction”, i.e. dipping the wafer in the wine yourself. This is because there are many instances of accidental contamination of the wine. If you have any concerns about this, please speak to John. SOLID: Some of our young people had a wonderful weekend last weekend at the SOLID festival. This is selection of the comments made by parents: ‘Would like to say a massive thank you for a great weekend Joshua loved it ❤️ xxx’ ‘All of you are having such a positive impact on Mia and giving her another happy safe place to be aside from home. Thank you ☺️’ ‘Both my girls are in bed already!!! They had a fantastic time, a big thanks to everyone involved in making the weekend such a fantastic time for them all.’ One of the young people has expressed an interest in being baptised and we are exploring the possibility of offering confirmation preparation to those who would like to explore that option. Please pray for our young people and those who are leading our youth groups. Hymns and songs chosen and introduced by members of our congregation and sung by us all!SOLID: SOLID is an annual festival for 8-17 year olds that brings together hundreds of children and young people from across the South East of England to discover and worship Jesus while taking part in all kinds of adventure, creative and sporting activities. It began back in 1996 and after going online in 2020, pausing in 2021 it is now back for 2022. The festival is organised by Scripture Union, Red Balloon Foundation, Kick London and the Diocese of Chelmsford and is open to any youth group from any denominational background. Please visit it to see the range of information there.Ian and Hanna Spillman retire: Ian and Hanna Spillman have left Kisiizi hospital in Uganda after two long spells of service there as Medical Superintendent and Senior Midwife. Their link with St. Mary's goes back 40 years, to when, as students at ANCC, they worshiped with us and led the youngsters CYFA group. They then got married and went to Kisiizi with Tearfund. During their time a school was established for staff's children and a nurses training centre to enable the hospital to train much needed nurses. Over the years St Mary's have raised money for bed linen, tyres, medical equipment and much more. For many years we sent banana boxes packed with stationary, food, clothing and many other requirements; these days we regularly send boxes of knitted items for new babies. Ian and Hanna came home to work but eventually they were asked to return in 2012. The hospital has grown and covers all medical needs for patients from many miles. Back in the UK they will be working with the Friends of Kisiizi (through whom our donations are channelled), still supporting the hospital. We are grateful that we have been able to follow their work. It has been a privilege to support them and we pray that they will be able to take a break before working in this new role.
