St Winwaloe's
Welcome to St Winwaloe's Church, East Portlemouth, in the beautiful South Hams of Devon.
We continue to move, post-Covid and now we have a new priest and an expanded Benefice, back towards weekly services in the church. However, this has not been possible as yet. We are able to hold at least two services a month, usually on the first and third Sundays, so look at our Calendar for coming services.
With the closure of our building, and some people not being able to give due to the financial impact of the pandemic on them, we cannot receive all the gifts that we usually would, so we really need your help now. If you are able to give more at this time, we would be very grateful for your online donation.
The parish of East Portlemouth, St Winwaloe's, is committed to the safeguarding of children, young people and adults. We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our own Parish Safeguarding Officers, (PSOs). The Diocese of Exeter’s safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA) who advise our PSOs. If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the DSA. If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority Children or Adults Services.
Thank you.
Our Vision
God calls us and gives us grace to use the gifts He has given us to grow as a loving and Christ-centred people, faithful in worship, rejoicing in differences, open to the gifts of the Spirit and working as His servants in our communities.
God calls us and gives us grace
We will be open to His voice however it may come to us. Through His strength we will do His work.
To use the gifts he has given us
We rejoice in the many gifts that God gives us. We will use our individual and collective talents to reach out, to serve and communicate the Christian faith to others.
To grow as a loving and Christ-centred people
We will grow in our common worship, deepen our understanding of our faith and draw others into our Christian fellowship. We will foster good relations with other Christians in sharing our journey of faith.
Faithful in worship
We worship the one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. As the only Anglican Church in East Portlemouth, we will offer worship for all age groups in Liturgy and Sacrament, in Praise and Prayer.
Rejoicing in differences
We acknowledge and value our different experiences of God. This diversity is a strength to be cherished and supported. We will explore and embrace the richness of faith as understood in a variety of ways in the Church. We rejoice that we are loved as we are, with all our imperfections and at every stage of faith, forgiven and enabled to fulfil our potential as His people.

St Sylvester's Church, Chivelstone
St Sylvester's Church was closed on the 4th January 2021for many weeks.
Major Restoration works are taking place. We are very grateful to the following funders for their support: National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Garfield Weston Foundation, Devon Historic Churches Trust, Allchurches Trust, Beatrice Laing Trust and Devon County Council.
We are very excited, our beautiful mediaeval Church has begun its journey of repair and restoration; stopping water ingress in the tower and main walls,
Repairing the South Porch and South windows, replacing gutters and installing a toilet and shower and a kitchen if funds will allow.
Our rare and beautiful medieval pulpit is to be restored, it is carved from a single trunk of oak.
We are now in week eight, the work is progressing very well despite some very rough weather, the days are getting longer, we hope the repointing will soon begin.
Week thirteen now, The South Porch has been stabilised with 24 feet piles used to underpin the front walls. The front walls have been rebuilt and straightened up, the cracks have gone.
The vestry wall has also been partially rebuilt to repair the cracks.
The cement pointing has been removed from the main body of the Church, this is being replaced with lime mortar pointing.
The whole Church is covered in scaffolding to enable replacement of gutters and is ready for work on the tower.
July 2nd 2021. The builders are now in week 21 of the 44 week contract. The progress is very good. The gutters are fixed and the pointing is now nearly complete on the main body of the Church, this has allowed a lot of the scaffolding to be removed on the East and South side, the work that is complete is looking lovely. The builders are now concentrating on the Tower the whole of which is being repointed, a mamooth task.
One of the south windows has been removed to be restored with new mullions and lead work.
We had a hard hat day in June, the architect and building manager gave guided tours to small groups of the work in progress. A very successful day, visitors were very impressed.
