ST MARY'S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL
We have a special link with the village primary school which was OUTSTANDING following its last OFSTED inspection two years ago. Student numbers went up from 30 to the present 100+.
The incumbent is the Foundation Governor of St Mary's School for the United Federation of Schools of which Brixton school is one of five members. Half termly informal school eucharists are popular with students and entail using elements of Fr Simon Rundell's Nursery Rhyme Mass. Grapes and flatbreads are used as a symbol of the bread and wine. All who attend are welcome to participate. It is by far our biggest service other than at Christmas. Many younger students are also members of Messy Church.
The incumbent is also engaged with leading a Christian Ethos Group of 4 pupils in yrs 5 and 6 to explore Christian values and ethos, and to encourage leadership in worship by the group.
We have also launched a Year 6 whole day in St Mary's Church and grounds. The students are encouraged to explore the tower, ring the bells, play the organ, read from the prayer books and bibles, and complete searches and quizzes inside and out. The afternoon session encourages students to choose songs, prayers, compose prayers, and lead a whole school worship in St Mary's Church at 2.30pm. It was a moving and resounding success.
