Mothers Union members are involved in many areas of church life at St George’s. Beginning with our vicar Penny, our Licensed Lay Minister Pam and Lay Worship Leader Sue who lead and support us in our Christian lives. Other members are servers, Lay Eucharist Assistants, Sidespersons, Lay Pastoral Assistants, Family Ministry helpers, Choir members, Flower arrangers, ‘Holy Dusters’, office volunteers, Lunch Club helpers, Café Church helpers, after church 'coffee makers', bakers for church fairs and social events, Community Afternoon Tea bakers and helpers.
Now what else are we involved with? We support the Mothers’ Union Overseas fund and the Holiday fund for families in need of a break. We have provided teddies for the children on these holidays. When items are needed for the Women’s Refuge, we collect for them. Other projects we have been involved with are knitting Twiddle mitts for dementia patients, red hats for babies in hospital who need a little extra nursing care, tops and hats for the Fish and Chip babies (babies in Africa are often sent home wrapped in newspaper, hence ‘Fish and Chip babies’). We have collected socks, scarves, gloves etc. for the homeless in our area.
All welcome to come along.

Sunday Services

Every Sunday at for 1 hour

St George Oakdale
Address
Darbys Lane, Oakdale Poole, BH15 3EU, United Kingdom

We have two services every Sunday morning.

8.30am in the Lady Chapel is Holy Communion using Common Worship material, with a Book of Common Prayer Holy Communion Service on the fourth Sunday.

10.00am is in the main church, and on the first three Sundays is a service of Holy Communion with a choir and sung setting. The words and songs are on a screen, with paper copies available for those who need them.
On the fourth Sunday we have an 'Altogether in Church' service enabling our family ministry from the hall to join us in church for a non-eucharistic service that caters for all ages.
When there is a fifth Sunday we have Altogether in the Hall, enabling our church congregation to worship with our family ministry team. This might be a Communion Service, or in a Cafe Church style - something different every time but enjoyed by all.
After the 10am services all are welcome for refreshments in the Church Hall.
These services are also on Zoom. Please contact the church office for the zoom link if you would like to join in from home.

On the second Sunday of each month we have an Iona Service in the Lady chapel at 5pm. Please check our website for details.

Once a quarter, on a Wednesday, we hold a 2pm Cafe Church. See our website for more details.

Messy Church is church for children and adults ideally aimed at school age children and their families. It doesn't follow the format of traditional church because it provides something which is tailored for families who have no previous experience of church. It typically includes a welcome, a long creative time to explore the biblical theme through getting messy with arts and crafts; a short celebration time involving story, prayer, song, games and similar; and a sit-down meal together at tables. It's fun! It's a church for people at all stages of their faith journey and of any age - a congregation that is as valuable and worthy of investment as any of our other congregations.

Knit & Natter

Occuring
Monthly. Every Second, Fourth Wednesday at for 2 hours
Venue
St George Oakdale
Address
Darbys Lane, Oakdale Poole, BH15 3EU, United Kingdom

Our ‘Knit and Natter’ group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday each month from 2-4pm. There are between 17 and 23 ladies at each meeting and we start with a cuppa (and biscuits). Within the group, there is a huge variety of knitting, crocheting, lace making and sewing abilities from complete novices to highly skilled crafters. Everyone brings their ‘current projects along to the group.
We often respond to requests for specific items such as small blankets for premature babies or items to be sent overseas for children in poverty. We also knit items to sell at the Christmas and Spring fairs.
The best thing about the group, however, is the nattering. We have great fun and lots of laughs and chatter. Anyone is welcome at the group - you don’t have to be a member of the congregation - just come on in and join us.

A Reflective Service at 5pm on second Sunday of the month.
Iona is an Island off the Scottish mainland where people go to find peace and spiritual refreshment within the Iona Abbey. Our worship reflects that and each month we have a different theme for our service. We look at the season of the Christian year, issues that are at the heart of the day, reflective issues and many more. We encourage those who attend, that want to, to take part by reading a certain passage or acting out a drama, both of which are provided in a service sheet. Many people who attend appreciate having the service sheet to take home in order to reread the contents and use as a prayer tool.
