St Margaret’s Churchyard in Rainham has been awarded Green Flag status in recognition of its careful stewardship as a welcoming, safe and well-managed green space that balances nature, heritage and community use. Located at the heart of Rainham High Street, this Grade I listed churchyard is a working burial ground, historic landscape and valued public space. Guided by a comprehensive Churchyard Management Plan, the site is cared for by the PCC alongside a dedicated team of volunteers, local community groups and environmental partners The award recognises the churchyard’s strong commitment to biodiversity, with wildlife-friendly grass management, habitat creation, tree care, bird and insect provision, and participation in national citizen-science projects. Environmental responsibility is embedded through low-impact maintenance, peat-free planting, minimal chemical use and climate-resilient planning. Equally central is the churchyard’s role as a place of welcome, remembrance and refuge. Well-maintained paths, seating, signage and clear sightlines support accessibility and safety, while sensitive management ensures dignity for those visiting graves alongside everyday community use. This Green Flag Award celebrates a shared achievement — reflecting local pride, long-term vision and the belief that historic churchyards can be living spaces where people, nature and heritage flourish together.
