As many of you will have noticed the interior woodwork on the roof covering the chancel is showing damage and now in the interior the northside is showing water coming in through the roof. We have also had birds nesting in the church as they have been able to get in through the holes in the roof!
The architects and surveyors have been in and tell us that we need to remove all the tiles and replace the rotten wood and beams and then using the old tiles, and second-hand tiles to match, put the roof back on the chancel end of church.
We have three quotes the cheapest of which is over £30,000
We need to find some money to undertake this work. Even though the church is Grade 2* listed it receives no money from central or local government. Other than help with the salaries for the clergy of the benefice we receive no money from the diocese for church repairs – in fact we have to pay an amount every year to the diocese.
While we will apply to charities for funds and apply for grants we will also need to find a proportion locally.
If you have a justgiving account please log on to the account and search for Wellingham church roof – then click on the picture of the church and donate what you can. This is the easiest way to donate as if you are a UK tax payer we automatically get the tax added to the donation.
