There have been around 6,500 burials since 1559 (so perhaps 10,000 since the foundation of the church in Stogumber) but most of these are unmarked. Over the centuries, plots have been reused, and old wooden or stone grave markers have been lost. 

There are currently around 443 marked plots for 664 named people, and we know the rough position of the unmarked graves of a further 95 people. These are all listed in the attached spreadsheet. 

Although big, the spreadsheet is easily searchable, and with a little knowledge of Excel, it can also be sorted and filtered to highlight the information you are seeking. Please read the 'Explanations' tab on the spreadsheet for more guidance.  

The churchyard has been mapped twice. First in the 1980s by the Women's Intitute and these maps are on the tabs of the spreadsheet. In 2026 the churchyard was remapped using GPS and this map is attached. The spreadsheet gives the location of each grave for both the old and the new maps. We are in the process of double-checking the grave records against the new map, and it would be very useful if you could email [email protected] if you find any errors or omissions.
