1. 1,000 knitted Poppies needed !!!
1,000 knitted Poppies needed to mark 80th anniversary of end of 2nd World War.All Saints Church needs fabulous knitters everywhere to knit 1,000 Poppies!! It’s a big ask, but we can do it.
2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe, so, how many poppies can you make between now and the end of September? To bring the community together, Oaksey Church, with your help, is planning to create a large poppy display on the front of the Church altar for the Remembrance Day service on Sunday, 9th November.
If you are local to Oaksey, you can pick up a printed copy of the pattern in the Village Shop or Church porch. If you have any spare wool, please pop it into one of the boxes. Please drop off your completed poppies in the Shop or Church porch.
If you are not local to Oaksey, the knitting pattern is detailed below. Alternatively, the organiser of this event (details below) can arrange for a copy to be emailed to you and also to arrange delivery of your poppies.
The poppies will be on display in future years, so you’ll be making a little bit of Oaksey history.

Knit 10 rows in garter stitch.
11th row: Knit 2 together all across row (30 stitches).
12th row: Slip 1 stitch, knit 2 together, then pass slip stitch over (psso). Repeat this across the row (10 stitches).
Cut the yarn leaving a long tail and with a big-eyed needle, thread the yarn through the remaining 10 stitches and pull the poppy together.
Sew the side seam, then sew a black middle, or sew on a black button, or, with black wool, cast on 16 stitches, then cast them off. Roll the piece around and sew in the middle of the poppy.
For a smaller poppy, you can cast on 48 stitches and then after row 11, you’ll have 24 stitches and after row 12, there’ll be 8 stitches.
