About Us
St. Giles is a Church of England parish church dedicated to making the love of God known to everyone in Orton Parish and beyond. We achieve this through our worship, fellowship, and outreach initiatives, aiming to foster a sense of belonging and spiritual growth within our community.
Our Parish
St. Giles serves as the parish church for the communities of Baldwinholme, Great Orton, Little Orton, Orton Rigg, and Woodhouses. Our church stands as a spiritual home to those living in these areas, providing a welcoming environment for all who seek to engage with faith and community life.
History and Heritage
The eastern quarter of our church building dates back to 1098, reflecting a rich and enduring heritage. St. Giles is recognised as a Grade II* Listed Building, constructed from sandstone blocks that were sourced from Hadrian’s Wall. Located in the heart of Great Orton village, the church is reputed to be the first church erected in Cumberland following the Norman Conquest, marking its historical significance in the region.
Our Worshipping Tradition
There has been a worshipping congregation at St. Giles for over 900 years, continuing a longstanding tradition of faith and community. While our congregation spans many generations, we warmly invite new faces to join us as we carry forward this legacy of worship and fellowship.
Our Mission
As the Family of God within our community, we are devoted to worshipping Jesus and serving the local community with His love. Through our collective faith and actions, we strive to make a positive difference in the lives of those around us.
