At our October meeting we welcomed our friend Margaret Hughes who spoke about the amount of time we spend looking at the notifications on our phone in comparison to the number of times we look at our Bibles for direction and advice. She ended by showing us an interesting video on the development of the Bible and its importance through the ages. Margaret also brought a selection of Christmas cards and other cards for us to buy to support the work of the Mother’s Union.
We are waiting for the Diocese to again advertise the vacancy for our next Priest-in-Charge.With the appointment of our new Bishop—Rt. Rev. Rob Saner-Haigh, we anticipate this will have a positive effect on encouraging applicants to respond to our advertising.Meanwhile, there has been a significant development within our Barony—the Diocese has been considering our needs for our next Priest-in-Charge, and the Archdeacons of both Carlisle and West Cumberland have met with our parish representatives. The parish representatives were advised that it would be in our barony’s best interest to transfer our Benefice from the Archdeaconry of Carlisle to that of West Cumberland. The Archdeaconry of West Cumberland encompasses the balance of the Solway churches. This transition would move us to a Deanery with mostly rural parishes. All six of our parish churches have met and accepted the Archdeacons’ advice regarding the Archdeaconry transfer. The transition will likely be completed by late 2025. The Barony of Burgh includes the Parish of Orton (our church, St. Giles.) Our parish is comprised of Baldwinholme, Great Orton, Little Orton and Orton Rigg.
The Barony of Burgh by Sands (which includes our parish) is currently in vacancy, as our previous Priest-in-Charge, Rev Tudor Boddam-Whetham has been appointed as priest-in-charge at St John's Church on London Road in Carlisle, England. Our pattern of services will continue as usual throughout the vacancy. Anyone wishing to arrange a baptism, marriage or funeral while we have no priest-in-charge is warmly encouraged to contact our Church Warden, Mrs. Elizabeth Reed (01228 642906). Elizabeth will put you in contact with our friendly retired vicar. He will be very happy to assist you.
