Bell Ringing

Bell ringing got off to a great start in early October, after a gap of fifteen years, and six months on our first learners are graduating to independent ringing. It's been wonderful to ring with Graham and Dennis, who bring continuity and community even after so long a gap.

We've had master classes in bell handing from guest teachers, who travelled long distances to help us, for which we are extremely grateful. From instructions found on the internet, we've made silencers for all our bells so we can now practice without disturbing the peace. Individual sessions are now offered, to help consolidate new skills.

Our first outing to another tower was to Ambleside, and was so successful they invited us back. We are now joining Ambleside regularly on Mondays at 7pm, they are a friendly bunch and extremely welcoming. Whisper it quietly, it is even said, their bells are easier to ring than ours, making it a great place to learn.

We've hosted visiting ringers who are in the Lakes on holiday, and we visit other towers across the region. In addition to bringing the bells to life and enjoying each other's company, we have begun ringing before the service on Sunday, when we can. By prior arrangement (and for a fee), we are also usually able to offer ringing for special services such as weddings.

We are pausing our regular practices over the summer months and will begin them again towards the back end of the year. In the meantime, Ambleside welcomes all Grasmere ringers. If you'd like a go, have rung in the past, or are an active ringer, do go along to St Marys Ambleside on Mondays at 7pm. Everyone is welcome!

Bellringing is fun and sociable and no special skills are required, go along and learn something new. For more information or to join the WhatsApp group for ongoing updates contact Kate O'Donoghue on [email protected]
