Taizé is a small town in the Burgundy region of France where a monastic community, founded in 1940 by Brother Roger Schütz, has been the focus of worldwide Christian pilgrimage. The community is well-known for it's simple, chant-like style of worship and prayer, and is especially popular with young people, with over 100,000 people making pilgrimages to Taizé every year to pray, study and work.
St Mary's Rydal have held Taizé -style services since the 1980's. At the turn of the millennium the Rydal Hall Community and a group from St Mary's visited Taizé. Today we meet on the first Sunday of the month at 7pm, excluding January and August. In winter (November, December, February through April) we meet in Rydal Hall chapel and in summer (May through July, September, October) at St Mary’s Church Rydal. Quiet reflection, Taize chants and readings given by members of the congregation are enjoyed in soft candlelight. Everyone is welcome.

Chris Wadsworth will give a talk 'Pursuing Percy'. Chris ran Castlegate Gallery in Cockermouth for many years and she is selling Kelly's works at the Theatre by the Lake 25th October to 15th November. Tea and cakes. Membership £15 or guests welcome £5 per meeting.

Join us in a sacred encounter at Rydal Hall.
Soak in nature, celebrate and give thanks for the goodness in the world, and gather
as community in the beautiful surroundings of Rydal Hall.
This month’s Sacred Encounter is an opportunity to remember those who have made sacrifices for us and to celebrate their lives by walking up a small local hill to make a cairn. The cairn is a symbol of the people who have made sacrifices for us, with each of us bringing a rock to form the cairn.
We will also gather as community in the sharing of food and conversation around a fire at the Pilgrim’s Rest. The Sacred Encounter is preceded by an opportunity to soak in nature through a walk, run, cycle or swim; or creative writing, reading or art.
Please bring: a rock for the cairn and food to share for a Jacob’s Join lunch.

A special commemorative service

Service begins at 10:45am with prayers and two minutes' silence, followed by prayers and an Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial on Broadgate Recreation Ground LA22 9RJ. Refreshments afterwards in the village hall.

Rob David tells the story of two left wing ladies who arrived in Howtown in 1940 pursued by MI5 and the Shap police. Tea and cakes. Membership £15 or guests welcome £5 per meeting.

Honour and celebrate the life of a loved one this festive season, with St Mary's Hospice. Everyone is welcome.

Traditional readings and carols in a beautiful candlelit church. Mulled wine served after the service. Everyone is welcome.

Rogation is an ancient church festival to seek blessing for a community and its sustenance.

God, teach us your children how to love your world so that we are careful stewards- of your creation. On this Sunday when we remember especially the countryside and all who work there, we pray for farmers, growers, all who tend the livestock and all who by their labour here and in every place, bring food to us.

A special festival service

Join us for a special service celebrating Grasmere Sports, a cherished tradition at the heart of village life for over 170 years. From fell running to Cumberland wrestling, this historic event reflects the strength, spirit, and community of Cumbria.

Led by Rev Lawrence Basham, we’ll gather in the beautiful setting of St Oswald’s Church to give thanks for the legacy of the Sports and pray for all who take part, support, or visit.
