Candlemas – the Feast of the Presentation of Christ

Occurring
for 1 hour
Venue
St Oswald's Grasmere
Address
St Oswald's Church Church Stile Grasmere, LA22 9SW, United Kingdom

Join us on Candlemas for a quiet, luminous celebration of Holy Communion, as we mark the moment when Christ is recognised as light for the world.

During the service there will be the blessing and distribution of prayer candles, for members of the congregation and visitors alike — small, tangible signs of prayer, hope, and God’s abiding presence that we can carry back into our daily lives.

Candlemas stands at the meeting point of light and shadow. It honours a child brought into the Temple, welcomed by the patient faith of Simeon and Anna, and proclaimed as light enough for the nations, yet already bearing the cost of love. This feast invites us to hold complexity with tenderness: joy and vulnerability, revelation and uncertainty, all held within God’s faithful promise.

All are warmly welcome — whether you come often, occasionally, or for the first time. Come to receive bread and wine, light and prayer, and to stand for a while in the gentle brightness of Christ.

St Oswald's Grasmere

A very warm "Welcome!" to St Oswald's Church, Grasmere

We are in the heart of the central Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. St Oswald's is a medieval church on a 7th century site - a sacred place of prayer and celebration since the earliest days of christianity in northern Britain. William Wordsworth with his wife Mary and sister Dorothy Wordsworth rest in our churchyard along with their family and villagers.

Locals and visitors "belong" here, both for quiet reflection and the joy of communal worship and music on Sundays and festivals.
