A Day for the Soul "Receiving God’s Plenty in a World of Scarcity"
Whether you are seeking rest, discernment, or a renewed way of seeing the world, this Quiet Day offers a spacious, gentle environment in which to encounter God’s generosity. Guided by Lawrence Basham’s thoughtful leadership, you can expect a day that is scripturally grounded, pastorally sensitive, and spiritually enriching — drawing on the beauty and contemplative atmosphere that make Rydal Hall such a beloved place of retreat.

We are delighted to invite you to this Quiet Day at Rydal Hall — a reflective and theologically rich exploration of Jesus’ promise: “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). The reverend Lawrence Basham is chaplain of Rydal Hall and rector of Grasmere and Rydal.

The day will explore two contrasting narratives that shape our lives:
• The scarcity story: “There isn’t enough. I am not enough.”
• The abundance story: “God is with us. There is enough. We can live freely.”
Through Scripture, silence, guided reflection, and the beauty of the Hall’s grounds, we will uncover what it means to live from God’s abundance — not sentimentally, but truthfully and courageously.

What to Expect
• Opening worship rooted in Psalm 23: “I shall not want.”
• Three reflections on abundance in creation, in Jesus’ ministry, and in God’s future.
• Opportunities for prayer and silent meditation.
• Outdoor practices highlighting the gifts surrounding us — light, water, stillness, creation’s generosity.
• A closing act of thanksgiving as we return to the world as people grounded in God’s plenty.

Themes We Will Explore
• Abundance as God’s posture toward us.
• Scarcity as a story of fear distorting our imagination.
• Jesus’ miracles not as displays of excess, but of relationship, trust, and participation.
• Embodying abundance: community, hospitality, and forgiveness.

All are welcome. The cost of £20 includes hot drinks and lunch. Please bring warm clothing and, if you wish, a journal or notebook.

Come and rediscover the abundance already at the heart of God’s life — and ours.

St Oswald's Grasmere

A very warm "Welcome!" to St Oswald's Church, Grasmere

We are in the heart of the central Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. St Oswald's is a medieval church on a 7th century site - a sacred place of prayer and celebration since the earliest days of christianity in northern Britain. William Wordsworth with his wife Mary and sister Dorothy Wordsworth rest in our churchyard along with their family and villagers.

Locals and visitors "belong" here, both for quiet reflection and the joy of communal worship and music on Sundays and festivals.
