If you've passed by the church recently you may have see the scaffolding up, which marks the start of the work to the building to help keep it safe. This is possible because of the success of our 'Safe and Dry' campaign launched 18 months ago. We have now achieved our target of £35,000, and are very grateful to local people who have responded so generously. Thank you to everyone who contributed. We are also grateful to a number of charities who have awarded us grants, among them The National Churches Trust and the Wolfson Foundation. Their support helped us achieve our target in time to start work this spring. As a result of this work, we hope to ensure that the rain is kept our of the building at certain points where it regularly comes in, and that failing stonework in certain areas is made secure. All of this is part of our stewardship of our beautiful parish church which is so loved by so many.
St John’s Church, Fleet Street, has survived many challenges over the years, but wear and tear take their toll on an old building. Our volunteers work hard to keep the church in good condition and safe to use. Last year we repaired dangerous stonework inside the church. Earlier this year we repaired the hopper that was causing rainwater to come into church. Now, we must repair external stonework that will become unsafe if not repaired. We need to raise £35,000 for that work. We have received some grant funding, and are applying for more grants, but we cannot raise the total needed without your help. If you can please help in the following ways: * Cash donations can be left in the collecting jars in church and in the café * Cheques payable to St John the Baptist PCC * Online at http://www.stjohnthebaptistcoventry.org.uk/ * By bank transfer to Sort code 08-92-99 Account name St John Baptist PCC Account number 67241190 quoting reference ‘Safe and Dry’ Thank you
On 18 May Fr Dexter dedicated a tree and plaque in memory of WWI veteran Arthur Ernest Clews who died of war wounds in 1918 at the age of 18. He is among those commemorated in our war memorial window at St John's, and he is now also commemorated in the War Memorial Park. Later this year, we will host an exhibition on our war memorial window and some of the men named on it - look out for details. For pictures of the occasion see St. John the Baptist, Coventry - Home | Facebook
