Supporting St John’s

An easy way to support St John’s financially is through bank transfer:

Sort code: 30-99-50

Account no: 44892668

Another means of support from taxpayers is to Gift Aid any donations.

Thank you!

Coffee mornings and the sale of jam etc. have raised £1453.65 this year, and the Strawberry Tea raised £287.30. Many thanks to those who made this possible by making or buying jam and, and in the case of coffee mornings, by donating raffle prizes, getting the room ready, baking, making tea/coffee and clearing up afterwards, or by just coming. As well as making money, they are such enjoyable social occasions. But do note the changed date and location of the September coffee morning.

Castleside Village Festival,

12th September

St John’s will have a stall in the school with games etc. We are also making a scarecrow. It will be Noah, complete with Ark and animals! They will be put at the side of the church door. Thanks to Mandy for masterminding this.

Derwentside Detached Youth Project

Our project sends workers into areas where there is a need for youth provision. Moorside was identified as one of those areas. In partnership with St John’s Church we were able to rent their hall for a nominal price on a weekly basis.

We provide activities for young people aged 10-17 who live in The Grove, Moorside and Castleside. The young people, up to 40 of them, who have registered with us enjoy free food and drinks as well as a mixture of fun activities. We have indoor badminton, table tennis, board games and art & craft sessions. We are open through the holidays and often take young people on offsite activities which in some circumstances they could not afford. We have some young people referred to us by children and young people’s services. Feedback from parents, carers and the young people themselves is very positive.

If we had not had the backing of St John’s Church this would not have been possible. Many thanks to Hilary McGeorge who has very accommodating and supportive.

Lynn Walton & Hannah Leslie,

Youth workers.

Life of an Allotmenteer, Part 2

Courgettes Galore!!! Never seen so many in my life!! Soooo I have been looking for recipes and finding them, it's just making them now!! Ron says "he'll be looking like one before long." Cauliflowers also, just as well they freeze. I am so proud to have grown these, as some of the allotmenteers have been trying for years and not succeeded, Ron says it's beginners’ luck, me I'm just happy at the outcome. So onwards and upwards that's what I say. Tune in for the next instalment. Margaret and Ron

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Charlotte Lloyd on her excellent A level results. She is going to read Law at Newcastle University. We hope she enjoys her course and uni life, and we look forward to hearing about it when she is next with us in church.

Saint of the month:

St Edith – 16th September

Edith, the daughter of King Edgar, lived towards the end of the 1oth century, dying at the young age of 23. She spent most of her life in Wilton Abbey near Salisbury. She was wealthy and well educated and although a nun, liked to dress in the height of fashion. When the bishop of Winchester rebuked her for this, she replied, ‘My father, the mind may be modest and God-fearing under fine clothes as under a serge habit. The God I love looks to the heart and not to the dress.’ Edith used her wealth to found a hospital that cared for the poor, for those with leprosy and other outcasts. It gave bread, money and shelter to those in need.
