Community Outreach

At St Gabriel’s we have strong links with our local community through a variety of projects.

We are members of the “Heaton Churches Together” group who worships together at key times of the year, and carry out joint projects such as:

Lent Lunches, The Good Friday Walk of Witness, Christmas Presents (a day of fun and useful activities in Heaton), Women’s World Day of Prayer (in March) and The Heaton Festival – a bi annual event that draws thousands of visitors to Heaton Park to enjoy food, games, music and entertainment and this year included a Heaton Peace Walk with our friends at the Heaton Mosque.

We were key in setting up Martha and Mary’s community Café on Chillingham road which is run entirely by volunteers from local churches and recently celebrated its 15th birthday.  We also have great links with the People's Kitchen, Simonside House and local food banks.

Our Clergy and Youth workers visit the local primary schools for assemblies (recently Jonathan enjoyed a joint assemble with the local Muslim and Buddhist leaders ahead of the “Great Get Together” weekend) as well as hosting visits from the primary and secondary schools in Church and we run successful Baby and Toddler Group and Summer Holiday Club.

We hold 3 main fundraising events throughout the year;

- The Summer Garden Party – This year we raised over £2000 to be split between the chosen Charities.

- Autumn Arts and Crafts Fair – a celebration of all the local Arts, Crafts and Musical talents there is in Heaton.

- The Winter Wonderland – a fabulous and very popular Christmas fair to raise money for local causes.

We have an Afternoon Eucharist in church and monthly home communion visits at the local Nursing home and the Thursday Morning 10.30am Coffee mornings are a great place to socialize and chat.
