Friends of St Mary's
The Friends of St Mary's are a group of people who are enthusiastic about the mission of St Mary's and wish to provide further financial support. Their contributions support projects and expenditure which goes beyond day-to-day expenses. Membership is open to anyone who wishes to support the church, irrespective of their faith, at a cost of £10 a year. To find out more, please contact: [email protected].
A Message from the Friends of St Mary's:
Supporting our community: The Friends of St Mary's are dedicated to enriching the life of our church and the wider parish community. We exist to support the people and work of St Mary's in ways that go beyond the everyday, helping to create a church that is vibrant, inclusive, and full of life.
Supporting our young people: Our young people are at the very heart of our parish, and the Friends are proud to support them. We provide practical and financial support for our Sunday schools and children's corners, helping to make church a place where children feel welcomed and supported.
Supporting significant steps along the journey of faith: We provide small gifts to young people at Christmas and Easter, and to those developing their faith at Baptism, Confirmation, and Marriage. These are tangible reminders that our church community is thinking of them and celebrating alongside them.
Enriching our worship: We are delighted to support the wonderful St Mary's Church Choir, whose talent and dedication bring so much joy to our worship and to all who visit.
Creating a welcoming space: The Friends are committed to making St Mary's a place that feels open and inviting to all. In recent years, thanks to the Friends' regular donations, extra giving, and a generous legacy; we have funded:
- new notice boards outside the church, ensuring that anyone passing by can find clear information about the church and how to get involved;
- new lighting for the church, greatly improving visibility and creating a lighter, more welcoming space for visitors;
- a coffee machine, helping to make time spent after services a warm and sociable occasion for all;
- display boards inside the church, which feature specially commissioned photography that captures the warmth and character of our community. These displays have become a real draw for visitors and newcomers alike, helping people feel at home from the moment they arrive.
How to Get Involved
Whether you are a lifelong member of the congregation, a newcomer exploring your faith, or simply someone who has a connection with St Mary's, Portsea, membership is open to everyone and we very much welcome new people.
To help support the maintenance and development of St Mary's ministry and mission, membership is £10 a year.
