INTRODUCTION - Please sit
We gather early in Cowes Week in this church built for sailors, to
pray for God’s blessing upon the sailing community, on the town
and on all who come here to spend time in Cowes and on the
waters around the island. We remember with thanksgiving those
who enable this annual celebration of sea and sail which enriches
so many lives.
We are here today too, to pray for the sailing clubs, organisations
and businesses of this town and to give thanks for all who work
within the sailing community on the Island. Especially as we
celebrate the 200th year of the Cowes Week Regatta.
We will remember those whose daily lives are given to working at
sea and preserving lives at sea, and we will pray for their safety.
And lastly, let’s spend a quiet moment thanking God for our lives,
and all the many blessings he has given us.

Let us thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wonderful works to humankind.
And let them offer thanksgiving
and tell of his deeds with songs of joy.
Some went down to the sea in ships,
doing business on the mighty waters;they saw the deeds of the Lord,

God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from
the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he

Gospel Reading, according to St Matthew: 14.24-34
The boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted
by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn
Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples
saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,”
they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to
them: “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,”
Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he
said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and
came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and,
beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus
reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said,
“why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the
wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him,
saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” When they had crossed
over, they landed at Gennesaret.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED - Please stand
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Let us Pray.
Almighty God we pray to you as the world around us seems to be
in turmoil, particularly in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and the
Sudan. We pray for the innocent: for women, men and children
who are killed, wounded and traumatised by the atrocities of war.
We pray for those with power - give them strength to seek lasting,
peaceful solutions and to resist the temptations of retaliation,
greed and personal gain…. Lord in your mercy: Hear our Prayer.
Almighty God, we pray for our Royal Family, in particular for King
Charles and Catherine Princess of Wales in their battles against
cancer, and for the other members of the Royal Family. Especially
we pray for Anne Princess Royal, here in Cowes today, and for
Edward Duke of Edinburgh, who both do so much to support the
community, charities and yacht clubs of this Island….. Lord in
your mercy: Hear our Prayer.

Almighty God, we pray for our Government in London and for our
local authorities here on the Isle of Wight and in Cowes, that we
may be governed with compassion, truth and justice. We thank
you and will never take for granted, the safe homes we live in, the
plentiful food on our tables and the freedoms we enjoy to believe
and worship our God, in our own way…. Lord in your mercy: Hear
our Prayer.

At the start of this 200th Cowes Week, we bring before God all who
will compete in the regatta, and those who will organise and
manage the races. We pray too for the spectators, and for the
local businesses and yacht clubs, who provide support and
hospitality. In this church, dedicated to Seafarers, with its
memorial to those who died in the Fastnet Race in 1979, we
remember all those who have lost their lives at sea. We also give
thanks and ask you to keep safe all hose involved in search and
rescue at sea…. Lord in your mercy: Hear our Prayer.

Dear God, we pray for ourselves. Give us Courage, to do and say
the right things, not the easy things. Discipline, to be good
examples in our own lives. Respect, to treat others as we would
like to be treated. Integrity, to be honest with others and with
ourselves. Humility, to put others first, me second. And Humour,
not to take ourselves too seriously…. Lord in your mercy: Hear our
Prayer.

In this special week, send us your happiness, love, light and
laughter. Let our joy of being part of your wonderful creation fill
our hearts and strengthen our souls…. Merciful Father Accept
these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus
Christ. Amen

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Gathering our prayers and praises into one, let us pray with
confidence as our Saviour has taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

sails. May Christ who stilled the waters be your salvation. May he
be a light in darkness and a guide for your course. And may the
blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,
