WESTLEY CHURCH BELL APPEAL The church of St Mary’s in Westley is Grade II* listed and was relocated to its present site in 1835. It is recognised as the first church in the world to be constructed of cement. It was designed by William Ranger, an innovative architect and builder who employed new and unusual materials and construction methods. St Mary’s possesses a single bell, cast in 1803 by Thomas Mears of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry and given its date, it is likely to have been brought from the former church site in Old Church Lane. Every generation or so significant maintenance is required at our church when we must look to residents and others for some financial support. The wheel is extensively decayed with the top section of the wheel having completely come away and is in very poor condition. Work will begin shortly on necessary and urgent repair to our one bell’s mechanism which has been quoted to cost £7,000 though, undoubtedly, we anticipate there will be some extra costs. We have been fortunate already to have received £4,700 from supportive charities for this work and ideally another £3,500 should ensure we have sufficient funds to meet all associated costs.
