ORCHESTRA OF THE RESTORATION: Farrenc, Mendelssohn & Strauss

Occurring
for 2 hours
Venue
St Mary's in the Lace Market
Address
St Mary's Church High Pavement Nottingham, NG1 1HN, United Kingdom

Mendelssohn - Overture: The Hebrides, op. 26
Marcel Tournier - Féerie: Prélude et Danse
Strauss - Horn Concerto No. 1 in E flat, op. 11
Louise Farrenc - Symphony No. 3 in G minor, op. 36

Kylia Tsz-Yam Pai (harp) & Joshua Davis (horn)
Peter Davis (conductor)

St Mary’s new Director of Music conducts his debut concert with the Orchestra of the Restoration. Opening with Mendelssohn’s famous and brooding concert overture, the orchestra will then showcase top prize winners from the last Nottingham Young Musician of the Year competition as soloists. Instrumental winner, Kylia, can be heard in Tournier’s colourful and enchanting Fairyland for harp and strings, and brass finalist Joshua is the soloist in Strauss’ heroic first horn concerto.

We also celebrate the remarkable music of Louise Farrenc, performing her brilliant third symphony to mark the 150th anniversary of her death in 1875. This symphony has been described by Tom Service as being “as impressively energetic and structurally satisfying as any of Mendelssohn’s or Schumann’s”, full of wonderful music that communicates her “uniquely expressive and significant voice that needs to be recognised and heard.”

Sunday Worship 10:45am in Church and Livestreamed from the Website

A welcoming and friendly church in the heart of Nottingham. In worship, we draw creatively on the best of the Church’s long history. This makes our worship formal – but, we hope, never pompous or cold. Our Sunday services are led either by The Choir of St Mary's, our acclaimed adult choir of scholars and volunteers, or by our Boy and Girl Choristers (monthly).

Our main Sunday service is a choral service of the Eucharist (Holy Communion) using Common Worship liturgy, which is also livestreamed on our website. Once or twice a term this service is replaced by a Family Service led by our Boys' and Girls' Choirs - see 'Services and Events' for more details.

St Mary's is home to the only twice-weekly service of Choral Evensong in Nottingham: on Sundays at 6.30pm, and on Wednesdays at 6.15pm during term-time, in a shorter form without a sermon. Sunday Evensong is livestreamed on our website.

Morning Prayer is said daily, Tuesday-Friday, at 8.30am, and a said service of Holy Communion is held on Thursdays at 1pm.

We are open to visitors on weekdays for private prayer between 11am-2:30pm.

We hope you will feel welcome here!
