Come along to St Nicholas' Church Bawtry
Between 2.00 - 4.00 pm
To look round this beautiful 12th century church with many original features.
Why not try your hand at ringing the church bells, accessed via a steep staircase, so not for the faint of heart.
Experienced Tower Captain and Bell Ringers in attendance to guide you.
There will be children's hand bells for the younger ones.
With display boards around the church.

The church, dedicated to St Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, welcomed many about to set sail or who came to give thanks for a safe return.
Built in 1189, the original part of the church was probably half the size of the church now, but the additions, alterations and repairs have been sensitively carried out creating the beautiful building you see today.
So, what is there to see? The font which will have be used to baptise so many.
The 15th century pillars are worth a look.
There are wonderful large dark boards on the north wall that have the Ten Commandments written on them.
A beautiful 16th century painting depicts the flight of Joseph, Mary and Jesus to Egypt.
There is wonderful stonework in the 13th century east window, the wonderful carved moulding on the outside is said to be one of only two of its kind in the country.
The15th century Lady Chapel, with a red and gold altar, is in memory of all men who have died for peace. It features figures of St George and St Michael and of soldiers by the cross.

St Nicholas

St Nicholas Church is one of five churches that form The River Idle Benefice of Churches. We are part of the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham in the Church of England. We seek to gather as Christ’s people, valuing everyone’s contribution; Growing in our faith, love and service; Going into the world as disciples. We gather to grow and to go.

We are committed to worship for all ages and offer a variety of services across our benefice and we worship together regularly as a benefice. We are seeking to grow our provision for children and families and as part of this commitment we have a 9.30am 'Living Waters' service every Sunday, which is very much an inter-generational church service, with contemporary worship and lasts for one hour. Our Kids meet over in the Church Hall for 'Sundayz Cool' during this time and we look forward to them sharing with us at the start and at the end of our worship. 

A Holy Communion service takes place on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 9.30am at St Nic's, when all of our congregations from across the Benefice, gather around the Lord's table.   Evensong is at 6pm on the 2nd Sunday and 4th Sunday in the month.  

There is a common worship Holy Communion service each week across the Benefice which is more traditional in style and where hymns are sung. Our benefice gathers together for these services which follow this pattern:

1st Sunday - 11.15am, All Saints' Mattersey

2nd Sunday - 11.15am, Holy Trinity, Everton

3rd Sunday - 9.30am, St Nicholas, Bawtry 

4th Sunday - 11.15am, St John the Baptist, Misson

5th Sunday - 1115am, St Helena's, Austerfield.

At St Nicholas there is a weekly service of Holy Communion, or morning prayer on a Thursday at 9.30am.
