The Clock at St Michael & All Angels, Chetwynd

A faculty was granted at the Consistory Court of Lichfield on 10th April 1906, authorising the ‘erection of a clock with chimes, on the north and east faces of the tower of the above Parish Church, the affixing of a brass plate (with an inscription thereon in memory of John Charles Burton Borough) to the frame on which the said clock is to be placed & the repairing of the peal of bells belonging to the above parish church.’

The clock was donated by the sons of JCB Borough (Thomas George and Charles Gawen) this dedication is recorded on the inscribed brass plate.  This item is mounted on top of a wooden cabinet that houses the clock mechanism: these are found in the ringing chamber.  The clock mechanism was fabricated in 1904 by Gillett and Johnson of Croydon.

The clock faces were restored in 2014 by Smith of Derby Ltd (as part of our spire restoration scheme). This company were kind enough to supply us summary details of the work they carried out: also a series of annotated photographs, taken in their workshop, that show various stages of the restoration process.

Details and images of the above items are available as downloadable files below.
